28 Days Later

28DaysAttack.jpg

Zombie movies are a long-standing tradition in the horror genre, but most of the time they are sub-par. 28 Days Later is the big exception to this rule. A virus, named Rage, is accidentally released from a research laboratory, and soon most of London is filled with zombies. Taking a break from classic zombie behavior, the monsters in 28 Days Later are not slow, shambling creatures that can easily be out-run. These monsters are fast, and vicious, and completely insane. One of the great new horror movies from recent years, it’s a must-see.

Fright Night

A retelling of the classic vampire tale, Fright Night is Dracula set in the 80’s.  While the styles are dated, this movie’s effects are not, and the story is told in a most entertaining manner.  A particularly strong cast and state of the art non-cgi effects make this one well worth watching.  In the horror genre, vampire movies are my favorite, and this is a very solid vampire movie.

The Stepfather

Stepfather.jpg

A man obsessed with the ideal family, The Stepfather marries one single mother after another in his quest for marital bliss.  The only problem:  when you disappoint him he has a bad habit of murdering his entire family, only to start over somewhere else.  A real gem from 1987, you can’t go wrong if you are in the mood for unprovoked rage and violence.  Even the sequels are pretty good!

The Exorcist III: Legion

ex302.jpg

This is the true sequel to The Exorcist, do yourself a favor and ignore The Exorcist II:  The Heretic.  In this amazing movie, George C. Scott plays Detective Kinderman, and he’s on the trail of the Gemini serial killer.  Brad Douriff plays the soul of the Gemini killer, and his performance is chilling.  Filled with the nastiest revelations, The Exorcist III: Legion is a worthy and unjustly over-looked sequel.

Dagon

Easily over-looked, this movie based on an H.P. Lovecraft story is very well executed and creepy as hell.  Four tourists shipwrecked near an old village find themselves in the midst of a community of people who are being transformed into monsters.  Dark, rainy, and filled with tension, Dagon is a perfect rental.  If you’ve seen it, leave a comment and validate my taste in movies!

Lair of the White Worm

lair.jpg

It’s not very likely that anyone reading this has seen Lair of the White Worm, but it’s worth tracking down.  Based on a novel by Bram Stoker (of Dracula fame), this movie is about a Snake Priestess and her insatiable appetite for fresh blood.  Very hard to describe, the strange music and an early appearance by Hugh Grant make this one well worth watching.  I welcome comments from anyone who has seen this cult classic.

The Amityville Horror

amityville03.jpg

Based on a true story, The Amityville Horror tells the story of a man driven by the supernatural to murder his family.  Everyone of my generation has seen this one, and it’s still effective as a horror movie today.  Some of the classic haunted house features are present, from the little girl’s invisible friend to the rocking chair that moves by itself.  Some of the most frightening scenes use no special effects at all, such as the house’s obvious attempt to thwart communication with the family priest by filling the telephone with static.  Creepy throughout and with an exciting finale, The Amityville Horror is worth repeat viewings.
